The Department of Humanities and Linguistics offers Certificate Programme in Foreign Languages with an aim to:

  • Offer innovative, flexible and cost-effective foreign language programme for learners from all sections of the society.
  • Offer programmes based on the specific needs of the learner to create pool of specialized foreign language experts.
  • Promote communication across borders and countries.

In view of the existing demand due to its multiple practical applications, the study of foreign languages is gaining immense importance in academic studies, and this demand is increasing continuously. The Department of Humanities and Linguistics works in collaboration with other departments of the University to develop human resources for a number of sectors, like Science, Technology, Humanities, Social Sciences, Law, Commerce and Management.

The globalization of business has led to the demand of specialized foreign language experts. The expertise in foreign languages can be value addition for professionals of different sectors.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

Certificate Programme in French Language (6 Months)

Sarala Birla University offers Certificate Programme in French language (CFL). The programme aims to introduce French to beginners and gradually builds skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking and to develop intercultural competence of the learners.

This introductory programme on French language is based on the guidelines of UGC and CEFR (Cadre Commun de Reference pour les Langues). The main purpose of the programme is to provide specific tools, both linguistic and cultural to develop the communicative competence of a learner so that he/she is capable of fulfilling certain tasks in his/her professional and cultural milieu.

The university provides suitable adaptation as per needs of the Indian learner. On completion, a learner should be able to communicate in French, i.e. he/she should be able to speak French in simple sentences, read a text, write an email in French, Introduce himself/herself in French.

COURSE CURRICULUM

This Programme is a six months certification programme in French language based on the guidelines of UGC and CEFR. The programme consists of three papers of nine credits. The detailed syllabus can be downloaded from the university website.

Paper I - CFL-01-Communicative Grammar-I [Full Marks: 100 | Credit: 3]
Functional Grammar based on the prescribed textbook.

Paper II - CFL-02 Text comprehension and written comprehension [Full Marks: 100 | Credit: 3]
Comprehension of simple texts.
Essays on simple topics, Email, Questions on civilisation.
Translation of simple passages into English and simple sentences into the foreign language.

Paper III- CFL-03 Oral Expression [Full Marks: 100 | Credit: 3]
Reading of texts, general questions on country and civilization.
Speaking simple sentences in French, Self-Introduction in French, describing family, friends and daily routine, describing the university or city.

ELIGIBILITY AND ADMISSION

Eligibility

10+2 or an examination recognised as equivalent thereto with an aggregate of at least 45% marks are eligible to apply. (05% relaxation in marks in case of candidates belonging to ST/SC category).
