The commerce discipline in higher education has witnessed a sea change over the past decades, with a range of specialisations and career options emerging in recent years. Commerce education develops the required knowledge, skills and attitudes for the successful handling of trade and commerce. Increasing industrialisation, changes in global economy, increase in entry of multinational companies into the country and expansion of service sector in the national economy have resulted in an increased demand for professionals with commerce education. Commerce students now have a wider range of responsibilities and diverse job functions in banking and financial services. Due to continuation of liberalisation, and global competitions among national and multinational corporate enterprises, specific demand for accounting and allied functions has been increased in recent years.

Sarala Birla University, Ranchi offers a two years full time Master of Commerce (M.Com) programme. SBU constantly strives at achieving its aim by maintaining the highest standard of the discipline. The Master of Commerce (M.Com) programme is divided into four semesters. Students are also exposed to the corporate world through regular industry-academia interface, special guest lectures, workshops, summer internship and short-term projects, all of which are a part of the course design and is mandatory for the students. This Course helps students to gain practical exposure in varied branches of commerce. The programme provides accounting experience and helps to analyse recent developments in financial innovations and their influence on the effectiveness of monetary policy. It prepares them to analyse and interpret financial statement of corporate and other sectors. 

The Department of Commerce and Management strongly believes in the philosophy of Experiential learning with Outcome Based Education. The pedagogy is practical, hands on and realistic. Problem Solving Exercises, Case Studies, Role-Playing, Management Games and Class Presentations are especially into practice. The curriculum is planned to facilitate learning of all aspects of Commerce, ensuring the students holistic development, accomplishment of predefined learning outcomes.

COURSE CURRICULUM

The two-year full time Master of Commerce (M.COM) programme is structured very carefully in order to create an academic, experiential and transformational learning environment. The course is designed as per the UGC – CBCS scheme.

Pedagogy

Mentoring

Mentoring programme is designed for providing students a hand to help, guide and listen them as and when needed. Mentoring at SBU contributes significantly to the academic and emotional wellbeing of the student. A student is attached to his/her Mentor for a given period of time which is helpful towards the development of a special bond between the mentor & mentee, resulting towards a greater reciprocation of thoughts and ideas. Mentors guide their mentee in achieving the desired career path. To make mentoring rigorous and value added, mentors maintain a record of mentee and track of his/her performance and attendance regularly.

ELIGIBILITY AND ADMISSION

Eligibility

Passed B.Com/BBA (any stream)/BA Economics with 45% marks from a recognized College/University. (05% relaxation in marks in case of candidates belonging to ST/SC category).

Admission Process

Applicants may submit the application form and required documents at the Admission Office personally or by post. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that the application form is complete in all respects, and is accompanied by the required documents.

Applicants should attach the copies of the following Certificates/Documents.

  • Passing / Provisional Certificates along with Mark Sheets of the qualifying Examinations
  • School/College Leaving Certificate last attended 
  • Conduct Certificate 
  • Anti-Ragging Affidavit 
  • Medical Certificate issues by a registered medical practitioner (M.B.B.S)

Note: Final Year students awaiting the declaration of results can also apply and can also be considered for Admission. However, they have to submit the relevant supportive documents at the time of admission
