SBU x UC BERKELEY INTERNATIONAL STUDY PROGRAM

The Berkeley International Study Program (BISP) offers a unique opportunity for students from Sarala Birla University to study at the prestigious University of California, Berkeley, for a semester.

Program Overview

BISP allows international students to fully immerse themselves in the UC Berkeley experience. You'll enroll in undergraduate courses alongside UC Berkeley students, participate in campus life, and explore the vibrant culture of the Bay Area. This program is specifically designed to facilitate academic and cultural exchange, providing a rich and transformative learning experience.

UC Berkeley Campus

Academics

BISP partners with most academic departments on campus, offering a wide range of undergraduate courses. A preliminary list of participating departments is available online. You are encouraged to explore the course catalog and identify courses that align with your academic interests and goals.

Academic Advising

BISP provides personal academic advising to help you navigate course selection and ensure you are on track to meet your academic objectives.

Academic Support

You'll have access to tutoring and student learning center resources to support your academic success.

Finances

Program Costs

  • Tuition: $850 per unit (minimum 12 units required)
  • Fees: $12,575 (includes application fee, international services fee, registration fee, BISP program fee, and health insurance fee)
  • Living Expenses: $11,250 (estimated cost of housing and food)
  • Additional Costs:
    • SEVIS Fee: $350 (subject to change)
    • Textbooks: $200-300 (depending on courses)
  • Total Estimated Cost: $23,825 - $26,375 (for 12 to 15 units)

Financial Aid & Important Notes

  • UC Berkeley financial aid is not available for visiting students
  • Some students may be eligible for Fulbright funding (typically for graduate students, availability uncertain)
  • Important Note: The UC Extension International Student Services office will not issue visa papers until you can demonstrate financial support of at least $23,825 for the semester

Sarala Birla University will nominate students for the BISP program

BISP will contact nominated students to schedule an online interview

Invitation & Application

BISP will provide an invitation letter and instructions for completing the online application form

I-20 Document

You will receive your I-20 document after submitting the online application form

Visa Application

Use the I-20 document to pay the SEVIS fee and schedule an appointment at the US Embassy or Consulate

Program Duration and Other Options

BISP Duration

BISP follows the academic calendar for Fall and Spring semesters, which are 17 weeks each.

Short-Term Programs

If you are interested in a shorter program, UC Berkeley Summer Session offers courses as short as 3 weeks. These programs are open to all students on a first-come, first-served basis and do not require a formal partnership.

Research Lab Visits

Research lab visits can be arranged directly with the research lab, but strict procedures are in place for international visitors, making them difficult to arrange.

BISP provides guidance and support in finding suitable housing accommodations near the UC Berkeley campus.

Orientation

BISP offers a comprehensive orientation program to help you acclimate to campus life, learn about university resources, and connect with other international students.

Social and Cultural Integration

BISP organizes various social and cultural events to help you integrate into the campus community and experience American culture.

Health Insurance

BISP includes mandatory U.S. medical insurance in the program fees. This ensures you have access to healthcare services during your stay. You may be able to waive this if you have a comprehensive medical health insurance plan that meets certain requirements.
